MERGE – measuring what matters: Technical and data deep dives

An overview of six co-creative workshops exploring challenges limiting the application of beyond GDP indicators

As part of the project MERGE – Measuring what matters, we organised six co-creative workshops to explore challenges limiting the application of beyond GDP and Sustainable and Inclusive Wellbeing (SIW) indicators. The workshops covered: data harmonisation and collection for wellbeing and sustainability indicators in the EU; comprehensive welfare measures; new methods in time use surveys; and wealth accounting.

This report provides an overview of all the workshops, known as ‘Technical and data deep dives’.

A concluding section identifies cross-cutting themes across the workshops, including the value of partnerships between National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) and academic researchers, the central role of the System of National Accounts in operationalising new measurement approaches, and the tension between pursuing harmonisation and preserving national flexibility, alongside the resourcing challenges NSIs face in developing SIW indicators.
