Data harmonisation and collection for wellbeing and sustainability indicators
Based on interviews with national statistical institutes, this report looks at the feasibility of a shift to sustainable and inclusive wellbeing indicators.
There is growing recognition of the limits of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and more and more momentum to 'measure what matters' for societal progress.
The feasibility of a shift to alternative metrics 'Beyond GDP' depends largely on institutions that rarely appear in the spotlight: national statistical institutes.
National statistical institutes provide the expertise to define indicators, collect data and ensure the credibility of official statistics. Their capacity to expand measurement frameworks is often constrained by legal mandates, limited resources and the continued priority of core economic statistics.
Drawing on interviews with 19 experts involved in indicator development across ten countries, this publication examines the data gaps and the lack of harmonisation and coordination for developing new indicator frameworks.
It puts forward recommendations for national statistical institutes, policymakers, international organisations (e.g., OECD, Eurostat) and others.
