Policy-Lab “Sustainable Prosperity made in Europe”

50 years ago, humanity has travelled to space, uniting behind one shared mission. Today the EU’s mission is no less complex and calls to think beyond existing policy approaches. In this light progress will no longer be limited to technological creativity. In the face of the global challenges political creativity is required, to master the art of complexity in policymaking.
The policy lab “Sustainable Prosperity – made in Europe” aims to use this creativity by bringing together members of the commission (ECFIN, COMP, GROW, RTD, ENV and EMPL) with selected experts in the field of the economic transition. Using the potentials of co-creative methods, the participants will elaborate on feasible and bold options for realigning the compass of economic policymaking on wellbeing, meaning and sustainability.

Aim

By bringing together members from across the DG spectrum and using an interactive format the event aims to

  • foster knowledge-sharing, cross-cutting debates and collaboration on policy responses
  • boost discussion and foster reflection
  • identify innovative institutional leverage points and policy options

Key Questions

  • How should we deal with the existing conflicts and synergies between GDP, wellbeing and sustainability objectives?
  • How are policymakers limited in their ability to focus policy design on sustainability and wellbeing and move beyond GDP?
  • What is needed to shape the conditions of the EU for becoming agnostic about GDP?
  • What are the necessary policy and institutional changes associated with these questions?

Output

  • key obstacles, procedural recommendations and policy options to move beyond GDP
