2021 has been a year of disruption, of challenges but also of hope. The Greek forest fires and the German floods – to name only a few examples – point towards the urgency for doing a lot more to battle climate change, and for doing it quickly. The Glasgow Climate Pact that confirms 1.5 degrees of global warming as the global objective brought a wave of hope in the joint efforts to build an economy that cares about the people and the planet’s health.

We’ve been striving to bring in these very changes at ZOE. 2021 witnessed an increase in our numbers from a team of 5 to 17. With our increased manpower, we were able to scale up our activities and expanded our focus to work in key areas: recovery and resilience measures including fiscal policy reforms; mainstreaming the wellbeing economy and measuring progress beyond GDP; developing policy pathways towards 1.5-Degree Lifestyles. We’ve worked closely with policymakers and our key partners to translate our work into concrete policy measures. One cornerstone is the recognition in the 8th EAP of the wellbeing economy as a priority and the mandate given to the EU Commission for the development of a summary dashboard an indicator set beyond GDP. Our collaboration with the European Commission on analysing the national recovery plans and reforming the fiscal rules adds another feather to our cap. ZOE is also proud of its progress in the 1.5-Degree Lifestyles project, which included the launch of two policy briefs on the equity dimension and the emissions gap as well as co-hosting a policy lab with DG GROW.

Just as the climate demands big changes in the coming years, we have big plans for 2022.

  • Strong focus on our core expertise in the fields of recovery & resilience; fiscal policy; wellbeing economy; lifestyles.
  • Greater emphasis on governance process and trade-offs to improve decision making.
  • Expanding our networks of fellows and reinforcing our advisory board with leading economists.
  • Expanding our work on framing and narrative, and new coaching sessions involving our key partners in this field.

We’re very happy to send out the first edition of the Future-fit Economies Update and hope that you will enjoy it.

Finally, we would like to extend our gratitude to our partners for their collaboration and support that has made our work possible.
